NIGHT ON THE PLANET/CreepHyp – Lyrics Explanation

Welcome to My First Post!

I’m all about sharing my love for music, manga, and all things popular from Japan that have made waves overseas. I’m currently learning English! I’m sure there will be plenty of odd English phrases here and there, so feel free to drop me any advice or requests!

For my first post, I’d love to ramble on about a song from one of my favorite bands. Let’s dive right in!

Creep Hyp is a Japanese rock band formed in 2001. They’re famous for the high tone voice of their vocalist, Ozaki Sekaikan, and their unique and slightly provocative expression. His voice may sound strange to some people, and he actually self-deprecates it. I’d love to talk about the band someday, but for now, let’s focus on this song.

This song doesn’t sound like their usual music. I think it was a challenging song for them in terms of sound, but it’s still full of their attractive sounds. Here is the song:

(Note: I will put my own interpretation of the lyrics at the end of the page. However, everyone has their own interpretation, so it is for reference only.)

Getting to Know ‘NIGHT ON THE PLANET’ by Creep Hyp

The title of this song comes from a movie originally titled “Night on Earth,” directed by Jim Jarmusch. The Japanese title of the movie is “Night On The Planet,” although I’m not sure why the name is different from the original. Anyway, this song was named after the movie.

About the sound, it’s so cool! Impressive guitar with a wah-pedal and a slow chilled song. I can’t say anything other than cool, so let’s talk about the lyrics.

The lyrics seem to reminisce about the moment when the person watched the movie with their girlfriend (or FWB). This song is about the passage of time and how we change. In this song, the movie “Night on The Planet” is kind of a symbol for the expression of time. The poster for that movie has always been displayed next to the flowers. And Winona Ryder always has a cigarette in her mouth, next to the flower. Despite the world around him and his own perceptions evolving, the memory of that shared moment remains vivid. It doesn’t mean anything, but he just remembered it. I think it’s that kind of song.

– Subtitled or Dubbed –

Let me talk about one of the lyrics of this song, my favorite part:

-1st verse
“We preferred watching movies with subtitles rather than dubbed.”

-2nd verse
“Better to watch with dubbed than subtitled. Watching anime with my child, who is more precious than my life.”

I like the different lyrics in the first and second verses.

On a personal note, I have a sister who also loves Creep Hyp. She used to go to their live concerts a lot. She still loves the band but hasn’t been to a live concert in a while because she got married and had a cute baby. I’m sure she has more important things than being at a music venue. When she listened to this song, she said, “It’s a pretty good song.” It’s so cool that the lyrics can create something beautiful without denying or agreeing with what is natural.

I’ll leave you with my impressions now and let you enjoy yourselves! By the way, there is a video of him explaining the lyrics of the song on Youtube:

Finally, this song is also the theme song for the movie “Just Remembering.” The lyrics of the song are also related to the movie, and the band members themselves perform the song. I’d like to introduce the movie too!

I’m eager to know what you think! Feel free to share in the comments!
Thank you for reading this posts!

Interpretation of Lyrics by tros

Dragging something along the ground, then forgetting about it.
But it still tastes bitter, it’s so bitter.
I find myself waiting for something like this, after all.

Night on the planet, the poster in the frame.
Beside the flowers by the window.
We preferred watching movies with subtitles rather than dubbed.
Rewinding time, there are many embarrassing moments I’d rather forget.
I paused at the worst scene. The line I said the night we met was,
“I’ll unhook your bra, but I’ll wear that thing, so leave everything to me.”
Cannot fly in the sky but I can skip work.
Love, hate, and part-time job. Take off tomorrow. I just wanna stay with you.

Clinging to the night, melting it with the morning.
Dragging something along the ground, then forgetting about it.
But it still tastes sweet, it’s so sweet.
I find myself waiting for something like this, after all.

Instead of those days,
I’d rather have it dubbed than subtitled.
Watching anime with my child, who is more precious than my life.
Before I knew it, I had become a mother.
Moments where I wish time would just stop.
I wish it would light up the tip of my toe for the future.

Night on the planet.
“See you later.” How many movies has Jim Jarmusch made since we parted?
Winona Ryder still has a cigarette in her mouth, next to the flower.
Let’s film the awesome scene.
Got wet in the rain on the way home, that’s okay.
Just let the wind dry it out.
It’s been a long time since I’ve watched the movie, but it’s something different.
I just remembered something about that.

Clinging to the night, melting it with the morning.
Dragging something along the ground, then forgetting about it.
But it still tastes sweet, it’s so sweet.
I find myself waiting for something like this, after all.

Night on the planet, the poster in the frame,
Beside the flowers by the window.
We preferred watching movies with subtitles rather than dubbed.
